Publication of Books, Journals, Magazines, Monographs

The Society for Disability and Rehabilitation studies has so far brought out two major publications authored by Dr G. N. Karna (a noted expert on Disability Studies/ Human rights at JNU & Honorary President, SDRS) under its auspices--such as, United Nations and the Rights of Disabled Persons: A Study in Indian Perspective (New Delhi: APH, 1999); and Disability Studies in India: Retrospects and Prospects? (New Delhi: Gyan Publishing House, 2001), apart from 12 special issues of the International Journal of Disability Studies and 7 special issues of the Vikalangata Sameeksha magazine (in Hindi) on various issues of contemporary significance. These publications have been highly appreciated by the UGC Curriculum Development Committee on Human Rights and Duties Education constituted under the Chairmanship of Hon'ble Justice Dr V.S. Malimath (formerly Chief Justice of Karnataka and Kerala High Courts as also then Member of NHRC, Govt. of India) and are incorporated in the syllabi formulated for different courses of Indian universities ranging from Foundation Course in Human Rights and Duties (at Under-Graduate level) and Certificate Course in Human Rights and Duties to Post Graduate Diploma Course in Human Rights and Duties and Post - Graduate Degree {MA /LLM} Course in Human Rights and Duties for universities and academic institutions throughout the country. Several Indian universities -- such as, Calcutta, Burdwan, North Bengal, Bhopal, AMU, NALSAR, Jamia Millia Islamia, Pondicherry, Kerala and BHU- have already introduced a paper on Law and the Disabled at the level of LLB (Hons.) and also an optional paper on Disability and Human Rights as part of curriculum formulated for LLM / MA in Human Rights courses.

The books / publications and the International Journal of Disability Studies brought out under the auspices of the SDRS have been acclaimed globally and formed the basis for further research work in Disability Studies by a host of Indian and Western scholars, including the Department of Disability and Human Development, University of Illinois at Chicago (USA) and University of London (UK). Moreover, the organization has already launched the publication of Monograph Series on Disability Studies in Higher Education by way of enriching literature and stimulating Indian and foreign scholars/ experts to venture into the area of Disability Studies. Three monographs--such as, Promotion of Disability Studies in India: Role of Institutions of Higher Education (Dr G. N. Karna: 2007), Disability Studies in India: New Directions for Future (Dr G. N. Karna: 2008) and Disability Studies in Health and Nursing Sciences (Dr Philip Scullion, 2009) have so far appeared on issues of contemporary significance in Disability Studies and efforts are going on to further publish a series of monographs/ occasional papers (authored by noted experts on Disability Studies), apart from next issues of the International Journal of Disability Studies and the Vikalangata Sameeksha.
